Every day, people see the term "ramayana" and think of an obscure Hindu myth. However, not many know that Ramayana is actually one of the great epics of India. This article will introduce you to this epic story about Prince Rama's struggle to save his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana. The Ramayana tells about prince Rama, King Dashratha’s third son who went into exile because he was falsely accused of imprisoning his stepmother Kaikeyi (queen mother). The story then shifts its focus on his wife Sita (daughter of Tivara) who accompanies him into exile even though she was pregnant at the time. According to the epic, Rama was a king in his own right while Sita was a princess who was born of a union between him and Kamara, his wife. A demon named Ravana wanted Sita for himself and plotted her abduction. When Rama learnt that Ravana has abducted Sita, he took Jambavan's help to search her. The story then shifts its focus on Rama’s victory over the demon queen Kumbhkaran by slaying 7 of her 8 brothers with the help of dwarf Salim. After this victory, he is called back to Ayodhya where he wrongly imprisoned his stepmother Kaikeyi in order to regain his throne. The ill-fated stepmother to her stepson, Kaikeyi plotted to free herself from prison and take Sita with her as a revenge for Rama's misdeeds. In this part, the story focuses on the love of Sita and Rama. In this part, both Sita and Rama are prisoners in Ravana's capital Lanka. The evil queen Kumbhakarna marries Rama to a sorceress named Kaikeyi intending to break his relation with Sita. This plot fails since Sita is kidnapped by Ravana. In the end, Rama gives a sermons to his disciples urging them not to be easily impressed by people's power. He later challenges Ravana to a duel and slays him. In this part, people came up with great feats which they were unlikely to achieve. It was said that a monkey could swing 90 trees at a time and a man could stretch a bed bed over the sea. In the last part of Rama Yana, Rama battles with Ravana one more time and finally slays him after an intense battle which took almost 3 days. In this final battle, Rama uses his dual arrows as well as his divine weapons. He slays the powerful Ravana by using his instructions from his father, Shiva. Rama then takes Sita to Ayodhya with a chariot drawn by 12 strong elephants. The Ramayana tells about Prince Rama’s triumph over the demon king Ravana, his wife Sita's kidnapping and her rescue from the demon king Ravana, and Rama's teachings on moral life. A lot of elements from this epic have been incorporated into Sanskrit poetry as well as into Indian art that exists today. For example, the Ramayana characters are widely portrayed in Hindu temple art as well as sculpted images on temple walls. cfa1e77820
